RIT Dye Powder

RIT Dye

The Rit Dye company was established in 1917 by Charles C. Huffman in an abandoned warehouse in Chicago. After much experimentation in his blue and white enameled pot, he succeeded in creating a powder that would simultaneously wash and dye fabrics.

Despite its rather prominent role in tie-dye, Rit Dye remains a vibrant staple of the DIY world even today. See their color formula guide for directions on how to create 500+ shades from Rit's standard range of 26 colors.

Rit Dye works best in the washing machine, but can be mixed easily in anything as small as a glass jar with warm water and a bit of salt. Each box contains 1 1/8 ounces (319 grams) of powder.
